Shouldn't a modern mystery thriller in that situation involve the heroine frantically running and tripping away from the villain, screaming "Can you hear me now? Can you hear me now?"

I would think though, the obvious response would be to put the protagonist in a situation where calling for help really won't help. It's much the same justification for why the protagonist doesn't get on the phone and ask for help before they get into a situation where they are boxed in. "Oh, it's that crank calling again. Remember the last time he called about the Mad Slasher?"

Also, I could use cell phones to put a time limit on both sides. Yes, 911 has been called...but in this neighborhood, it takes about half an hour before the cops respond. Can our hero survive that long?

Fiction adapts, and so do people.
