I honestly think near-future stories are far more difficult to pull off than far-future stories. The political, cultural and economic changes are very chaotic. Copnsider for a start the number of authors who did stories set in the 21st. century, that had a functioning Communist bloc.

That's why I'm putting my "Under the Green Moon" setting 30,000 years out. It's safer that way.
