Why are many of the early plants rare/hard to grow or breed? Generic making valuable things rare, or unspoken assumptions about needing special fertilizer and not having been designed to be really independent biotech? I can see valuable plants needing protection since they spend energy on human-useful than non-self-useful things, but that's just weeding and pest control.
