[Science!] forest Rings and Giant Natural Batteries.

It's a delight to sometimes be reminded of just how weird the world is.  Take Ontario for example, which has forest rings visible only from the air, that appear to be caused by complex electrochemical reactions between methane gas and mineral deposits.  Or, to make things simpler for the laymen, negative charges caused by giant natural electrochemical cells.

It's still a beautiful, strange world world out there folks- let's keep it that way..

That's so COOL as a phenomenon. And yet-- if I read deeper into the article, doesn't that mean that the rings will get worse and kill more trees as greenhouse warming continues to worsen?

I don't think so. Apparently the main thing that's stunting the growth of the trees is the acidity of the soil. The greenhouse gasses are a byproduct of the process.

I'm more concerned about people using the rings as markers formining or natural gas extraction.
