In which I talk about my deprived childhood.

Yes indeed, deprived. Truly, utterly deprived. Deprived because my childhood didn't have Trek toys anywhere near as cool as this phaser and communicator

I mean, given how obsessively I played with my Trek toys at age eight, I probably would have had a complete psychotic break with cool looking toys.  And to get them I probably would have had to go on a multi-state killing spree to get the money and boxtops.  But it would be worth it.

As for now...now I am sadly, too old and too mature for such toys.  I have responsibilities and expenses- heck I have to monitor my food purchases now.  I would need a major mid-life crisis in order to be able to justify those toys.  Though I could point out to RxM that they would be cheaper than a 21 year-old model and a Porsche.  I think.

Hmm.  I'm feeling some middle-age stress coming on here....

Part of the appeal of the tie-in video games ("Incredible Hulk," "Star Wars: Battle Fronts," "Knights of the Old Republic") is that it feels like I'm playing with my old toys again, but in a much more entertaining way! Plus, nobody can steal my action figures!

Actually, that may be why I feel less of an appeal for those video games- I never really got into the Star Wars toys...though a lightsaber fencing game based on the WII would catch my attention.

Now, video games based on the old GI Joe action figures, or Micronauts, or Johnny West would brobably get my nostalgic atttention big time. And Trek of course. A Trek MMORPG could be a lot of fun.

It's coming

I forgot: they did make two Transformers games: one based on the cartoon, and another based on the recent movie -- the movie-based video game was sort of fun, but I didn't really click with it.

Now G.I. Joe would be a great game, maybe with multiple-member assault teams and squad tactics. Or just first-person, with unlockable alternate characters. Too many combat genres to simulate for most game companies, I would imagine: ground-based, naval/air, ninja.

Personally, I am dreaming of a cellphone the size and shape of a gold-plated pocketwatch, on a gold chain. I know they can.

Too old? Too mature? Faugh!

Nothing stopped me from entering to win the replica of Captain Kirk's chair at the Roddenberry booth at Comic-Con.

They also had some master replica level props there. About the only thing that stopped me from coming home with a communicator was the $500 price tag. I did buy my self a red-shirt though.
