March of the Robot

Recently released, some very interesting footage of the "Big Dog" robot undergoing its latest free and tethered mobility tests.

What's interesting to me is the times when it appears the most lifelike: when it's losing it's balance, skidding, or nearly falling. It's both fascinating and a little creepy, like it's approaching the Uncanny Valley from an entirely different area.

It's still a test bed of course; it will be interesting to see how and when this is applied in an actual vehicle; I'mthinking it's far more likely it will be used as a small vehicle- the equivalent of an off-road cycle- than it will as a military device.

And as an added special bonus...Transformer!

I think they're planning on using BigDog as basically a pack-mule.

As for the Transformer, I do find it impressive that not only have they made one work, but the head transforms to be where the cab of the car should be. It seems almost practical! :D

I remember now somebody mentioning something about that. I suppose it could be a substitute for a mule at that. I'm still waiting fro when they have the thing perfected enough for them to give tourists rides down the Grand Canyon.

As for the transformer, cool it is, but I can't help but remember the webcomic where the transformer forgot he had passengers in his cab...

Good gods, that thing is cool when it leaps. In my pretty princess future, there will be a programming/equestrian culture of robot dressage, with points given to smooth movement and grace, as well as the rider's ability to keep a good seat!

They have robot gladiatorial combat and races, I don't see why they couldn't have robot equestrian events.

Now all they need to do is put a colorful covering over the thing.
