Frank Miller's Buck Rogers...oh dear.

OK, now it's time for me to turn my nerd rage up to 11: Frank Miller to Direct "Buck Rogers" movie

I mean, I'm not even all that big a fan of Buck Rogers (though I used to like watching the serials), but I can only imagine what Mr. "Whores! Whores!  hoores! " will do to that classic SF property.

No wait, I don't have to.  The quote below tells me everything I need to know:

..."while the creator has only begun to sketch ideas, it's expected to be a darker take, with many of Miller's signature visual elements and themes, such as corruption and redemption. "

And whores of course.  Along with ninjas.  And ninja whores.

*sigh*

I'm right there with you. I've never been all that big into Buck Rogers, but I still shudder to think what sort of vile, shambling, misogynist abomination Miller will make of it.

Frank Miller's good in certain settings/approaches, just like Tim Burton. But there are some things he shouldn't be playing with, and Buck Rogers is one of them.

I have the huge coffee-table retrospective collection "The Adventures of Buck Rogers in the 25th Century", and I find it actually interesting to go back to it every so often. There are some parts that are, of course, wincingly bad, and others quite astonishingly good. But it's overall a tale of two-fisted heroes and black-hearted villains with minimal gray in between (i.e., while sometimes enemies become allies, it's usually because it was a misunderstanding or desperation that put them in opposition to begin with).

That's exactly it. I can see room for updating the Buck Roogers mythos as long as it doesn't involve destroying the basic heroic elements of the story. "Updating" Buck Rogers in the way that Miller would do would be like...like...I dunno, like having Mark Millar write Captain America or something. A Frankenstein abomination that would resemble the original in name only.

Remember our conversation on Wed about 50's SF fiction on Mars? Yeah. Whoever loves that genre should do Buck. Oh, and maybe some Flash Gordon homages thrown in for reference for the main bad guy. Er, girl. But NOT Miller. *hurl*

I think it's important to not just have a fan of the property, but a fan who understands and respects the concepts. I'm sure Miller is a "fan", but I doubt he has the respect needed.
