The dying of the light: City of Ember
One would think that the creators of the city of Ember would be a little less sanguine about redundancy involved in the terminal aspect of their project. I mean if I was in charge, I would have about a dozen boxes, or maybe include the countdown function in the main city clock.
Aside from that detail though, the novel City of Ember is a fantastic book. It does an incredible job of portraying the desperation of a refuge that has existed beyoned its time. Supply shortages, failure of basic services, all expertly depicted as showing that time is running out. Any novel that can turn what we would consider a trivial purchase into a Faustian bargain showsthat the author has an expert grasp of the characters.
The movie, while not as intense emotionally, is utterly beautiful. It gives a lived on yet exotic feeling that gas only been approached by City of Lost Children. I can't believe this film isn't more widely known.; the visuals alone-accomplished solely by set design- should earn it a reputation as a classic.
Also, for fabric hobbiests, this film is positively orgasmic. The motion that yarn is recycled by picking out clothing leads to some incredible fabric designs. The movie is worth renting for the costumes alone.
