In Which I Snark About New Anime, Spring 2014.

This last weekend I finally got around to checking out the new anime for Spring 2014. And I realized that these days I seem to have less tolerance for fan service than ever before. Which is probably why for most of the current season I'm only getting through half an episode or less.

Of course my ADHD doesn't help, and having Crunchyroll makes it so easy to not be tolerant of crap, the way we had to be back in the days of trading fifth generation copies of VCR tapes (insert standard "You kids have it so good!" rant).

Captain Earth: eh, yet another mecha show, so my tolerance is already low.  Suspension of Disbelief twigged right of the bat with aliens secretly chopping off half of the dark side of the moon to make a giant whatsit. Cut to futuristic city, flashback to fathers heroic sacrifice for no well explained reason, hero as a kid meeting a kid alien/clone whatever, blah blah blah...and then the commentary on the Hugo nomination shenanigans got intense, so I kind of lost track of what the anime was doing. I finally looked up to see the the aliens launching mecha powered by libido. Uh...yeah. And giant-boobed mecha. That's when I decided to watch something more highbrow. Like Arrow.

Nanana's Hidden Treasure: Biggest disappointment so far. It seemed to be sold as a treasure hunting adventure show. Instead I get a guy renting a room for college, getting a cute ghost girl roommate, and going for a boob grope. So far, fanservice roommate sex comedy with standard low-grade wannabe pervert hero. Meh. I didn't bother with more.

Bokura wa Minna Kawaisou: I've already seen Maison Ikkoku, thank you very much.

Irregular at Magic High School: So in a future-magic world, mutants- err I mean magic users are regarded as powerful weapons.  Our hero is a magic user who is adored WAY too much by his sister. He doesn't make the cut for a good position at Super Shiney Hogw- err, Prestigious Magic Academy because test scores don't compare to practical ability. But that's OK, because sister reassures him and they stare deeply into each eyes and- fuck that not even subtext incest shit. I moved on to-

No Game No Life: There's something kind of disturbing about making NEET's heroes. Anyway, after a badly depicted MMO fight, we meet  our brother and sister pair of shut-ins...and the camera introduces the sister with a between the legs crotch shot. And I realized the voice of the brother was making my teeth grind. Yeah, fuck this.

Mekaku City: Seriously, pandering to the NEETs bugs me. But on the other hand, this is by SHAFT, so it has really pretty colors and a great sense of abstract visual style. it does depress me a bit to realize that yeah that the first true AIs probably will install themselves in our computers in order to get us to buy things. At least they give our NEET here a personality that isn't massively annoying, and limited the fanservice (though the AI was clearly designed in universe to trigger all kinds of fanservicey elements), and there's enough indication that something seriously weird is going on to keep me hanging on. Plus pretty SHAFT design aesthetic. Oooh colors!

Bunny Cafe. Fuck moe. Fuck fuck FUCK moe. Someone tried to sell this show as slice of life comedy, and it turned out to be fan-service moe bullshit. I'm embarrassed I watched enough of that episode, for the girl in her underwear with a gun to appear.

Chaika - The Coffin Princess: Right in the opening credits I'm meh about the character designs.. It starts off with a scene of Ominous Pronouncement(tm) combined with You Are Nothing But A Tool(tm). Scene change- Coffin Girl appears out of a bush, as they do, followed by annoying dialogue with someone who can barely speak the language. And...and...oh hey, Vox Day's clever plan to disrupt the Hugos is coming to fruition! His allies are slamming any website that criticizes their packing the Hugo nominations! Will they succeed? Will the Hugos be completely discredited? Will- Oh, right, the anime is over. There were glowing people and evil unicorns, and a magical anti--tank rifle. And some conspiracy or something. Oh well, I guess I can watch another episode. Maybe. Depending on the Hugos.

Wow. That mostly really sucked. Maybe one or two anime that didn't annoy me to the point of switching them off before the ending. Let's see how the next batch fares!
