This last weekend I finally got around to checking out the new anime for Spring 2014. And I realized that these days I seem to have less tolerance for fan service than ever before. Which is probably why for most of the current season I'm only getting through half an episode or less.

Of course my ADHD doesn't help, and having Crunchyroll makes it so easy to not be tolerant of crap, the way we had to be back in the days of trading fifth generation copies of VCR tapes (insert standard "You kids have it so good!" rant).

Anyway, part 1: )

OK, so I admit it: as a kid I liked playing with my G.I. Joe (original large size) and Johhny West dolls action figures. I also like perusing art site for interesting character designs, and one of my favorite parts of WoW and City of Heroes were the character builders.

That's why I've been having a lot of fun with Anime Character Maker 2, It's a nice simple program where you can select from a menu of features and clothing, and come up with a basic character design fairly quickly. In some ways the choices are fairly limited, but it's a nice start, and it'll be easy to add more features in the next several versions of this, so it'll be interesting to see where this goes. And as a quick way to churn out basic characters, it's not bad.

As an example, just for fun, here is an anime version of my character Zanne from my current D&D game. The trick was getting the proper absent minded expression for him.

What Do I Do With Those Darn Anime Kids is an essay by an art teacher who encounters the frustration fellow art teachers have with kids who are constantly drawing anime-style artwork. Or, as the teacher puts it:

At the time I just sat back and took it in, unbelieving.  What do you do with those damn anime kids, huh?  You mean, the kids that are interested in drawing?  The ones that are interested in learning concrete skills that will help them tell stories, with an interest in the human body, in posture and proportion?  Gosh, what is an art teacher to do with such challenging students?

For my part, I can totally see where she's coming from. One of the major things that I do in my work as a tutor is find out what the student's interests are and sculpt the lessons as much as possible about them. For the kid who is fascinated by tanks or the young woman who is interested in dancing, these give me points too engage with them, and to make the lessons interesting and useful from their perspective.

So, this is a nice little essay about engaging kids with an interest, instead of complaining about them. It's well worth reading for anyone interested in teaching, anime, or working with kids instead of against them.

I never thought I'd actually say it.

Or really, that I'd have to.

After the rumor that Keanu Reeves was planning to create a live-action "Cowboy Bebop" movie hit Metafilter:

"Uh guys? Your geek rage is at 11, and I need down to about a 6, OK? Thanks. "

So on Saturday we finally managed to get the time to spend the $60.00 credit from Rasputins; the one that we got when I traded in a bunch of insipid New Age DVDs that I had been given at work.  It was nice to convert say, Kitaro into store credit that could be used to buy good stuff.  As a result we got Enchanted, and a bunch of DVDs of unpopular-yet-good anime shows like Hyperpolice, Scrapped Princess, and Master Keaton.

All of which had a nasty side effect: staying up far too late on a Sunday night watching Scrapped Princess.  Admittedly it's a great show- the character designs, the back story, and the family dynamic between the characters are all nicely handled.  And the central mystery of the world is gradually revealed is paced very well.

But geeze, i am dead on my feet today.  I crave sleep like a junky craves heroin.  So no actual game or useful posts today.  I'm going to muddle my way through the next hour and a half, and then go home and collapse.

[profile] haamel has put out a request for anime geeks willing to help with a survery, for his job of all things.  It involves selecting a random number of anime, and ranking them.

The info is here, won't you give a hand?

So this weekend at Ani-magic was my wife's first try at Cosplaying, which meant that after a week of panicked last-minute costume assembly, she got to pose in her Rosenmaiden outfit...outside. At a convention out in the desert. In the afternoon heat. My wife, who can't sweat, in a beautiful, victorian layered hoop-skirt outfit.

While taking pictures of the group, I looked up to see a vulture gliding overhead, only about fifty feet above. And then another. And then three more. And then four more, all in a line. Now that, I thought to myself, if it isn't a bad omen, nothing is, and gave up hope of contest awards. Instead I started worrying about whether my wife would even survive.

Naturally, her group won best of show.

I guess the vultures wern't so much omen-like, as simply window shopping. They were probably gliding long, going "Hmm...look at all those fans. Surely one or two of the herd are going to keel over, leaving us a nice feast..."

And yeah, I'm extremely proud. Make that EXTREEEEEEMLY proud!

It's going to be weird getting back to a normal schedule at our house. And she's mentioned that she's going to need the computer for the next three days. Hmm- maybe not so weird as ominous. I see omens of a lack of night-time computer use in my future.
