December's Government Right Bastard Award Winner, California Region
...goes to Congressman Duncan Hunter of San Diego, who wants to take Santa Rosa Island away from teh National Park Service, and hand it over to the military as a practice range and vacation spot for military personnel.
And the best thing about it is his proposal has been defeated once before, and so he's now sneaking it in as an attachment to an omnibus spending appropriations bill to avoid any sort of debate on the issue. As far as I can tell, the Pentagon hasn't even asked for this gift- the whole proposal doesn't make much sense, so I strongly suspect some nasty quid-pro-quo or kickbacks involved here.
Frankly, the idea that Santa Rosa island will be taken away from public use and used as a target range without even public debate just frosts me.
