team Seven: Some background

Some quick notes for character creation, as I'm re-editing the background- it should be up tomorrow.

CHARACTER CREATION

So why do we need a team of supernatural cops anyway? Well....(Cue music)

The Werewolves, hate the vampires,
and the Vampires, hate the werewolves,
And the tengu hate the fairies,
and everybody hates the trolls...

*ahem*

The system we will be using is Risus. Characters will have to be people who can work with the police and government, not to mention monsters. There’s a wide range of character concepts available: we have a magical girl already, and we also have room for magical investigators, mages, changelings, etc. Concepts that take a poke at the classic clichés while not being overtly silly would be appreciated. Remember- characters in satire take themselves seriously, at least.

This is how to make a character in Risus. Don’t blink…

1. CLICHES

A Cliché is a generalized, defining trait for a character. When you look at a character and say “He’s a Faerie Lord””, or “He’s a Street Magician”, that would be a cliché. Some example clichés and the stuff they may encompass:

Werewolf (howling at the moon, being feral, being bitey)
Occult Investigator (researching lore, tracking down clues, screaming and fainting)
Motorcycle Cop (not falling off bike, intimidating look, wearing mirrored sunglasses)
Assassin (looking good in black trenchcoat and shades, killing people, sneaking)
Angsty Vampire (Looking good in black trenchcoat, writing gothic poetry, moping)
Urban Mage (Knowing what’s going down, looking good in trenchcoat, surviving by the skin of your teeth)

1D6 is a putz
3-4 D6 is competent,
5-6 D6 is Damn Good

The character creation system is a bit more structured than normal. All characters will get 6D6 for their main cliche. It’s suggested that this be a magical or combat related cliché, like Spirit Master, Werewolf, or Last Honest Cop in Mendocino. Since magic is a major focus of the game, simply having “Sorcerer” or “mage” isn’t a specific enough- a more narrow cliché like “Demonologist”, “Street Mage” “Nose Wiggler” is needed. You ALSO have 6D6 that you can distribute among other clichés,

2. BACKGROUND AND MOTIVATIONS

I’m not so much concerned with extensive character histories, as interesting motivations and goals. I‘ll accept maybe 100-200 words of history max, and another 100 or so words on motivations and goals. Which leads to…

3. THE HOOK

A character needs a hook: that is, an interesting flaw which can be the source of interesting stories. It could be an injury, an obsession, an enemy, whatever- as long as it’s interesting.

More information will be coming tomorrow.
