Snarky News for 4/21/04.

New Orleans, LA: This just came down the wire; Anne Rice, the more or less unofficial gothic symbol of New Orleans, is selling all of her property in the city, and is moving to a house in a gated suburb. No goths, no garrets, no black curtains (yet). It even has a pool in the backyard.

It makes a kind of sense- even though she's used her properties as the settings for much of her work, she's getting kind of old. She more closely resembles one of my mother's circle of sewing biddies then a gothic priestess. Lots of elderly ladies decide to move to more comfortable digs at a certain point, and it may well be time for her to retire. Time to kick back next to the pool with a mint julep.

Still, the city of New Orleans is not happy to be losing it's living tourist attraction, as they will need to find someone else for the vampire fans to stalk. And of course this has sparked a crisis in the goth community, since they won't be able to peer in her windows any more. All over the world, hoards of goths are engaging in violent (for goths) protests consisting mainly of exposing themselves to the sun. A crisis mediator may be needed, before hundreds of well-tanned bodies litter New Orleans' streets.

I just wonder what she's going to use as a setting now- pool gremlins maybe? Can you even describe a suburban pool in gothic terms? I wonder.
