UTGM: I'll take this as a sign of enthusiasm.

Because actually, it is, even though I can't imagine somebody actually creating uplifted sloths. Why the idea itself is fundamentally silly.

Unless of course, someone actually created them to be mobile sensors for the conditions in the jungles they live in. And the moss that grows in their hair could be a symbiotic organic computer matrix that not only records and transmits data, but releases necessary hormones into the sloth, or chemicals into the surrounding area. So these semi-mobile environmental laboratories/jungle guardians would still be creeping around, millenia after their creators are long gone, and...and...I think I need a lie down.

They also may have been created to be the social equivalent of the damper rods in a nuclear reactor. Imagine a frenetic society where everyone is rushing around and impatient and unwilling to take the time to see if a new policy works or not before they start tinkering with it, and then an addition of slow, deep thinkers to provide a longer-term perspective. Long-lived, uplifted sloths could be found all over the planet, tending to gardens growing on old disaster sites and other deep time projects...

I think uplifted sloths would be excellent space explorers. "All I have to do is sleep, I don't have to voluntarily eat or excrete until we reach Mars? Cool!"

I’d engineer them to show amazing speed once the adrenaline kicked in, just for handling emergencies.

"Hey, look, an asteroid will collide with us if we don't change course."
"When?"
"Next week."
"Fuuuuck, we're so screwed."
"Yeah."

Hee hee hee...this reminds me of [livejournal.com profile] darthsatyr doing his impression of a Weresloth changing form.
