Game Tools: a different sort of height/weight chart.

It's common for gamers, especially male gamers to be unclear on exactly what the combination of a given height and weight really looks like; how often have you seen a 5'8" 130 lb. woman described as "petite" in a character description? Standard height/weight charts don't really give an idea of what people of a given height and weight look like.

Enter the Photographic Height/Weight Chart,  which uses pictures of real people in its categories.  While it's far from perfect, it should be useful for someone who has an idea of what their character looks like, and from there they can figure out the  weight.

Actually almost anyone 5'8" or less and under 150 pounds is petite to me ;)

Yeah, yeah, we're your walking armrests. ;)

Conversely, folks like you make me lower my voice and check for apples or sugarlumps in my pockets.

It is nice to see that 5'9" and 190 pounds on a woman does not translate to LOLFATTY. This is a really neat reality check.

There are a few variables that this site doesn't account for, despite its inherent coolness. One is man/woman, and I'd love to see an example of each. Another is relative fitness level, and a third is frame. From the arm on that 5'9", 190# example, I'd guess that she works out. But she also apparently has a frame that carries it. If *I* were 190#, I WOULD be LOLFATTY... or beyond an Olympic athlete. (I'm 5'9", 140#.)

Along the same lines, I suspect anyone hearing [livejournal.com profile] jadecat9's raw height and weight stats would expect a much rounder woman than she is, because that lady is sheer muscle.

I agree: this chart does have a lot of flaws. For one thing, it doesn't take into account different body shapes, even broadly general ones like the Mesomorph, Ectomorph and Endomorph divisions. And of course there's the fact that a lot of the subjects are wearing loose clothing that obscures their outlines to an extent, and some lack of height referents, etc..

But then again, I still consider it better than the standard height-weight tables, as it does give a general idea of what a person at a given height-weight looks like.

I think the fact that it gives the idea of height and weight not making cookie-cutter appearances is important, too!
