Greek mythology

A quick question for those better versed in mythology than I am: does anyone know of a myth where a race between Iris and another goddess resulted in the sky being painted blue? Are there any similar myths?

Its kind of sad when the quality of a student's work makes one suspicious, but on the other hand, if its all her invention she may have a career as a writer.

quick and dirty research suggests that no, that's not in the canon of established myths. But this is very much quick-and-dirty research.

I'm actually pretty convinced it's completely original. Which makes me feel old.

I am not personally aware of any such myth. Iris was herself a fairly obscure goddess, mostly a messenger; some accounts had her as the mother of Eros.

It is of course possible that some other mythology has such an event happen, but I didn't find it on a cursory search.

Well, I don't think the original Greek myths had cans of paint as such, so I think it's original. And damn good work for a 30 minute essay by a 13th grader.

Maybe I should sneak some Diana Wynne Jones into her reading list. I I only could....

?? 13th grader?

I only know of 12 grades. (1st-5th, elementary school, 6th-8th secondary/Junior High, 9th-12th high school. After that, it's college.

Oh man I am a spazz. I can kind of figure out how I got from 11 years to Grade 13, and am amazed at the convoluted wrong paths my brain can go down.

It sounds like a mild cross of various myths. There's the one where 3 goddesses race for the golden apple story. Aurora, of "rosy-fingered" fame paints the dawn, of course. Tons of myths attempt to explain the natural world. Sounds like a pretty good riff on a series of established themes.
Not an expert.

She may have gotten the idea for the race from the Golden Apple, but the rest of it seems OK. So I'm inclined to let her live give her a good grade.

My mummified owl pellet of a heart cannot accept that a child is talented! Plop a phrase of her work into Google and see if she cribbed it from a book. CRUSH HER ENTHUSIASM

It's not immediately familiar to me, though I suppose it could be one of those really obscure tales that doesn't get a lot of attention.

Yeah. What's wrong with basing something on a myth, especially an obscure myth?

There's also such a thing as reading or hearing something once in a lullaby which later comes up in consciousness indistinguishable from one's own muse. This is a crime? Especially if the source is public domain?

How many words did she write on this? How many original words would she have to use to expand a basic short myth, to satisfy this teacher?

Well you see, since RXM works in academia, she's lost all ability to create anything, and is left with only the option to take out her wrath out on the young and talented.

We are actually in the market for a stepdaughter now, one whose spirit RXM can crush under her heel by forcing her to do dishes, mop floors and clean bedrooms when she should be allowed to write, draw and date older men. If you know of a good candidate let us know OK? In addition to young, she should be beautiful and her great talent and deep soulful nature should be apparent to everyone except RXM and I.

And as for the student, she was given a 95% because my soul has been crushed by the educational establishment, leaving me a hollow shell...and besides, the exam rubric told me to. The only thing I can do now is make snarky comments about an inconsequential flaw on her paper, as is traditional among my people.
