Three guesses what video game Scott Westerfield's been playing...

"Midnighters: The Secret Hour" by Scott Westerfield, author of the "Uglies series.

A blurb about the novel:

Strange things happen at midnight in the town of Bixby, Oklahoma.

Time freezes.

Nobody moves.

For one secret hour each night, the town belongs to the dark creatures that haunt the shadows. Only a small group of people know about the secret hour -- only they are free to move about the midnight time.

These people call themselves Midnighters. Each one has a different power that is strongest at midnight: Seer, Mindcaster, Acrobat, Polymath. For years the Midnighters and the dark creatures have shared the secret hour, uneasily avoiding one another. All that changes when the new girl with an unmistakable midnight aura appears at Bixby High School.

Need a hint? No clue?

Try this:

The most I can say is hopefully in the novel, people don't have to put a gun to their head to activate their powers.

The game looks interesting - perhaps I will look for it!

It's one of my favorite games now. I enjoyed Persona 4 too.

They've announced Persona 5 but not what platform. I just hope it's a platform I can reasonably get without it being for just that game.

Persona 3 was really trippy. I loved the setting and the artwork.

Hmmm... Midnighters was published in 2004, and I don’t see any mention of a Dark Hour in the earlier games, so this may be a matter of the video game designers reading Westerfeld. I have the books, if you’d like to borrow them.

Yeah. For some reason, I thought Dark Hour was a newer book. Looking at the dates, it's kind of hard for Scott Westerfield to have copied Persona 3.

OK, so much for my going to a signing and asking Mr. Westerfield to sign a copy of Persona 3.

You could still do it— it would just be snarky toward the game developers rather than Westerfeld.

Persona 3 may have copied Westerfield.

Yes, if anything. I was stupid confused.
