Famous Women of SF Bingo

Nicked from James Nicoll and a couple other blogs.

SO, if you start with Diana Comet's Periodic Table of Women in Science Fiction (PDF) from Sandra McDonald's blog. And then you list them out in no particular order, so you have 110 women that are considered important in the SF field.

NOW, bold the ones you own books of, italicised, the women you’ve read something of (short stories count) and star* those you've never heard of

*( this is a star, folks.)

So as for me, I ended up with this, rather disappointing list.

I suppose I could make excuses such as "look at all the male writers I've never heard of", or explain that it's partially because I've become so picky recently I'm not reading many authors at all. But really, the main thing I'm coming away with is that based on the minimal research I did, there's a number of writers in this list with novels I'd like to have a look at.

Also, I noticed there's a lot of authors who really need some help with their websites. Just sayin'.

Dude, you've read Naomi Novik and we own some of her books. We also own at least one McCaffrey.

My apologies to Ms. Novik. As for McCaffery, I don't see any around. Unless one of her books is hiding under the couch festering....

I'm astounded at the number I've never even heard of... but on the other hand, I'm pleasantly surprised at the number I do know, considering how rarely I buy new books, and almost always on someone's personal recommendation.

I keep meaning to use the Hugo and Nebula award-winners lists as a to-do list... this sounds like another good one. Although I'd argue that the list is for *SF/F* writers, not just SF writers per se. (Cherryh? Sure. McCaffrey? If you squint hard at the Rowan series. Rowling? Really not so much with the "science" fiction, from what I know of her.)

McCaffrey also wrote the "Ship who sang" series and the Crystal Singer series, both in the SciFi side of Fantasy. ;)

It's so hard to distinguish the boundaries between SF and Fantasy these days, it's easiest to just use the term "speculative fiction" and have done with it. And yeah, Ship who Sang would be SciFi, though not particularly hard, even by the standards of the time.

I checked some authors web sites while researching this, and yeah, there's a number of authors in here I'd like to read...though maybe not as many as one would think. Also note, female SF editors are represented on this list as well.

Hmm I don't sort my books by authors gender so I haven't a clue.

Alphabetically should do. Though it would have been nice if this list was alphabetized.

Then again, there was one author on this list who I listed as read because I found out she was the writer on Doom Patrol after um, whassisname, the surreal guy took off. And looking at iher other stuff, it's no wonder that Doom Patrol was suddenly about sex and gender.

I honestly have a very loose sorting style that has not survived impact with my random reading habits.

Someday.

Of course they left a lot of people off the list, but honestly, I'm surprised that Jacqueline Carey and H.M. Hoover have been left off the list. Ms. Hoover's work may have been far enough back that people don't remember her work, but Kushiels (fill-in-the-blank) is popular enough that people really should remember Carey.

I seem to have read books by most.
