Wonder Woman: Still missing in Action

The news just came out: after months of hype and internet rage, NBC has announced it ispassing on the new Wonder Woman series. you know, the one that had her as a weight-obsessed CEO by day, and a jet-travelling crimefighter by night. The one that had this costume. So uh yeah, I guess we deflected that bullet.

The thing is, as EW reports, this is hardly the first attempt to update Wonder Woman- in fact it's merely the latest in a long list of failed attempts to put Wonder Woman on the big screen. It's odd in this post Buffy/Alias/Kim Possible/etc. age, but Hollywood is really skittish about putting out a film with a superheroic female star. Which kind of sucks, actually.

She's not just female, she's a female sex symbol--in addition to how much the plot and acting of Electra sucked, her costuming really didn't help. Most new folks feel putting her in the patriotic swimsuit is out of date or misogynistic, but no one can find a suitable replacement that is up-to-date, sexy, but not all about sex that anyone (not just most people, I mean ANYONE) will like.

Remember the fiasco with redesigning the comic character' costume? Not to call her a cow, but, well, Wonder Woman is a sacred cow. How do you handle a problem quite like Diana?

There have been some issues of WW with her in kind of a high-formal 'dress uniform' thing with a star-bordered cloak and a sword that are very awesome looking.

And, well, sex symbol, sure, but where people kind of fall off the wagon is that she's a Dominant sex symbol. I encourage you to get the Hiketeia one-shot hardcover that makes this about as explicit as you can probably get away with in a mainstream comics product. She literally beats up Batman until he crawls to and kisses her boot. Haaaaawt.

Diana's sexiness comes from competence at least as much as from appearance, and I think 90% of where the Kelley TV show failed is in failing to put that competence front and center.

Say what? Okay, where do I find this?

's available at Amazon, appropriately enough. The cover should, ah, convey the essence.

Plus, you know, Greg Rucka wrote it. He wrote the amazing Queen and Country stuff. Greg Rucka is effin' awesome.

I suppose a breastplate and armored skirt is out? For all that I've seen fantastic renditions of modern updates of ancient Greek armor by umm, various people.

Then again, I think the problem may be trying to modernize Wonder Woman's outfit, rather than going in a more classic, and well, Amazonian direction.

I humbly submit that 80 percent of the project rooftop contest a few years back would be a much better wardrobe for her to choose from than anything her staff has put her in.
