Wonder Woman: Still missing in Action
May. 13th, 2011 04:44 pmThe news just came out: after months of hype and internet rage, NBC has announced it ispassing on the new Wonder Woman series. you know, the one that had her as a weight-obsessed CEO by day, and a jet-travelling crimefighter by night. The one that had this costume. So uh yeah, I guess we deflected that bullet.
The thing is, as EW reports, this is hardly the first attempt to update Wonder Woman- in fact it's merely the latest in a long list of failed attempts to put Wonder Woman on the big screen. It's odd in this post Buffy/Alias/Kim Possible/etc. age, but Hollywood is really skittish about putting out a film with a superheroic female star. Which kind of sucks, actually.

Happy Birthday Carl Sagan!
Nov. 9th, 2010 06:03 pmNovember 9, 1934, Carl Sagan was born. so here's a birthday song!
And as a birthday gift for everyone, The first part of Cosmos.
Seriously, if you haven't seen this series, take the next week or so off, find it, and watch the whole thing. To hear Carl Sagen speak at the height of the Cold War, is like hearing a completely secular canticle, a prayer of praise for the universe. His faith that the universe is a wonder that can, that should be explored and understood is an much-needed antidote to the short-sighted cynicism and pessimism that surrounds us these days.
And just for fun, here's Carl Sagan with some friends:

Libraries: the Cool Thing.
Jul. 22nd, 2010 03:48 pmLibraries have actually been in the mass media in a positive way, believe it or not. There was the sharp defense of libraries by the Chicago Public Libraries commissioner, along with articles in Vanity Fair, A.V. Club, and the Guardian. Even NPR acknowledges that libraries are getting a hipper, more popular image.
So along with this new public image comes library videos. And this whole post is just an excuse to show them.
From Brigham Young University: "Hello scholars. Look at your grades; now look at mine. Now back to your grades, now back to mine."
Then, University of Washington's Information School gets its groove on in one of the most adorably geeky and sweet videos I've ever seen. Thereby proving librarians ARE totally hot: "Yeah You can use my catalog, catalog, (Don't forget the databases)"

Star Trek: It's a silly place.
Jun. 30th, 2010 12:05 pmStar Trek to "Tick Tock".
One forgets what serious partiers the crew of the old Enterprise were. And oh yeah, there's the space hippies. Not to mention the space Indians. And don't forget the space belly dancers. *groan*
And yes, it deeply disturbs me that I recognize every episode they yanked the scenes from.

I GOT IT!!!
Jun. 10th, 2010 04:42 pmThat's right, I was finally successful, and I'm very pleased with myself.
It really wasn't easy, either. It required quite a bit of patience and work. We're talking weeks of checking web pages, making phone calls, and repeated disappointment. And at the end it required crackerjack timing, and a willingness to jump into the car and go at a moments notice in order to get in before my competition. I even had to get a bit pushy, though only in the most polite way. Because sometimes you have to be aggressive to get what you want, and get to the head of the line.
And I did it. I really, really did it. Success is mine!
I finally managed to get a copy of "Dr. Who 4th series" from the library!
What? I mean, every copy's been checked out for the last two months!
