It's a sad, terrible thing.

I never thought I'd actually say it.

Or really, that I'd have to.

After the rumor that Keanu Reeves was planning to create a live-action "Cowboy Bebop" movie hit Metafilter:

"Uh guys? Your geek rage is at 11, and I need down to about a 6, OK? Thanks. "

I suppose I'd get pelted with rotten Pocky on that discussion board for mentioning that Cowboy Bebop isn't all that great storywise so who gives a crap about the acting? I know, I know, they can rewrite it so that Spike isn't a total moron who *spoiler beeeep* his life for a woman who obviously *beeeeeep* ages ago.

Personally, I would only care about the martial arts-- Keanu's good but I can't see him doing the jinky Gangle of Death technique that Spike does so well.

Feed Keanu =enough of a mixture of alcohol and cocaine, and MAYBE he could get it down.

Well, Cowboy Bebop is the second most overhyped and overrated anime I know of (with the number one spot being held incontestably by Evangelion), so what they do to it is pretty much supremely irrelevant to me.

However, visually Spike Spiegel is very much like a laid-back Lupin III, and that wouldn't be a bad choice for Keanu.

Note that Keanu is a nice, reliable, non-fit-throwing actor, and directors love working with him. This is why he gets lots of nice roles. He's also not nearly so terrible an actor as people like to paint him. He just does what the director says to do. If the director doesn't want lots of emotion, he won't get it.

I liked Cowboy Bebop, and yet I have to agree that it's over hyped. As for Spike, it's more than a casual resemblance to Lupin- the Bebop cast (with the exception of ed and Ein) was directly based on the Lupin gang, and the series itself is pretty much a riff off of Lupin III, so much so that I wonder if it's descended from the failed "Lupin IV" pilot.

And I totally agree with your comment about Keanu- I find him a pretty decent B-list actor. I've heard that one of the major reasons that directors love the man is that he shows up on the set every day, on time, sober, not hung over, and he's even memorized his lines. It says something about Hollywood culture that these traits can make an actor incredibly popular.

o_O And perhaps they'll ask Man-Faye to appear and complete the horrific cast list...?

Well they need someone to play Ed....
