Happy Birthday Baronlaw, Gaaneden!

And many many more!

In honor of your birthdays, I'd give you a Traditional Irish Toast, but I'm afraid they sound too similar to Traditional Irish Death Threats.

Instead, I give you a classic W.W.II cartoon courtesy of Toons at War (no good reason, I just think they are fascinating)

The best birthday cards I ever received...

Were given to me tonight by Alice and Dorothy!

This is the cover to Alice's card )

This is the inside of Alice's card- isn't it cute? )

This is Dorothy's card...she's a little different. )

The important thing though, is I love them both, VERY VERY MUCH!

So, this Bat-weekend.

I spent quite a bit of time working on a writing project, though not as much as I might have.  I still ended up with what I regard as a fair sample of my work.  More on that later.

On Friday there was a huge birthday blowout for [livejournal.com profile] deirdremoon and [livejournal.com profile] tronpublic .  They always throw the best parties, and I had a fantastic time, even though I got roped into abject mojito-making slavery for a good part of the evening.  I wish both of my dear friends a wonderful upcoming year.

Saturday, I danced.  And danced, and DANCED.  I managed to miss all of Silicon except for a very special Bat-photo-op (ask [livejournal.com profile] racerxmachina ), the masquerade and the dance, but the dance itself was well worth the money we spent to get in.  the DJ spun really good 80s rock; not just the traditional hits, but some b-sides and other obscure yet really danceable stuff.  Fr instance, I had forgotten how good "Peekaboo" is to dance to, and there was that other punk song that made me want to mosh and...and...it was fun.

Sunday I thought I would be injured badly (My knee has been doing a crazy bad acting up), but I was fine, just very very tired.  And so we drove over to Santa Cruz for RxMs tattoo consultation, came back, and I struggled to stay awake enough to write.

Today for my birthday I had a special lunch-time meeting, about which I really don't want to give details about right now.  I'll just say that I got some much-needed encouragement toward a career I really want to do.

And now, This weekend's unofficial bat-artwork!

Supers and Guns: That was the weekend that was

So, over the last weekend I:

1) Played a guest hero in the final game of a year-long superhero campaign...that ran Friday night and nearly oall of Saturday. I had a Green lantern Analog, and even if I didn't have that much to do I had a lot of fun. Part of it was the game, and a lot of it was the company.  More on that later.

2) Sunday I got up way, way, WAY too early to go up into the mountains to go shootin' with [livejournal.com profile] racerxmachinaas part of her belated birthday present. It started out cool and foggy- almost too cool, but the mountains were beautiful, and eventually the fog cleared away, and it became just a perfect day to be out shooting targets.
  • We got instructions, and though I was very, very cautious, my major fear did not materialize: I did not drop a gun, I did not shoot anyone in the foot, nor did I forget and accidentally point at anyone anything that shouldn't be pointed at anyone.
  • Of the three pistols we had (.22 auto target, .357 magnum, .45 automatic) the .22 was best for target shooting, with low recoil and a long barrel. The .357 was almost as good, and had the advantage of easier to see bullet holes. The .45 had a lot of kick to it, and I tended to not be accurate.
  • I tend to overcompensate my aim for the anticipated recoil- have to work on that. it wasn't so bad on the short range targets, but the 40 meter plinking range ment I only got one good hit in, with the .357 of all things. That Nestle's Quick bottle will never menace the earth again!
  • The targets were silhouettes, and after some deliberation, I decided not to take any home to pin on my annoying downstairs neighbor's front door, or put behind my desk at the office.
  • My lovely sweet dear [livejournal.com profile] racerxmachinaallowed afterward that some time we could get some guns if we take shooting up as a hobby, most likely either a .22 or M-1 rifle, and some light pistols.
  • She STILL won't let me buy a crossbow. And that's just injustice. She pointed out the reduced ineffectiveness of crossbows vs. zombies; I should have pointed out theri increased usefulness against vampires.
By the way, the people at the range were really cool and nice- it figures that the people there wouldn't be jerks about guns. there was a lot of checking out of each others guns, including a beautiful genuine W.W.I Mauser. And in spite of the "no instruction" rule, I got some good hints on firing stance and aim from a range master who turned out to be a really interesting SCA guy.

And then I went home, and collapsed and slept for four hours. Then watched anime to unwind. What a weekend.

FOR DANCINGSHAMAN: A GIFT

Well, I won't have a chance to give you hot chocolate, and I've been informed you probably wouldn't like a chocolate martini. So, instead I'll have to give you the Earth.

Or at least a tour of the cities of the earth, at night.

Happy birthday!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Many happy returns, [personal profile] britgeekgrrl!  In your honor, I'll give you a traditional irish toast!

...
...
...

You know, it's really hard to find an Irish toast that doesn't sound like a threat, an insult, or just confusing.

...

How about "May you live all the years of your life"?  Naah.
"May you die in bed at 95, shot by a jealous spouse."?  Umm.
"May your house always be too small to hold all your friends"?  Well...

In any case, you have my best wishes for the upcoming year.  I hope our friendship will continue to deepen like, umm, a thing that gets deeper.

So, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

A Pleasant Change...and Party Prep

Pleasant indeed.  I went outside on my usual afternoon saunter around the building, and it wasn't too hot.  Even walking across the parking lot didn't feel like crossing Death Valley like it did earlier this week.

Which is a good thing, because I have a lot to do this afternoon: go to the bank, buy beer, get two watermelons, dash home, doctor one of the melons, help clean up, prep the grill, get my pre-party panic out of the way, prep veggies, fix dinner, water the cats, feed the plants....

Thankfully it won't be so hot like it was before, when all I could do is lie around and think fond thoughts of a beer trough.  beer is going to be drunken like civilized people tomorrow!

The Positives and Minuses of Blackouts

The lights were out yesterday in our apartment complex, from the time we got home, to at least 11:30.  This meant that we missed an entire evening of prepping for the party, so things are going to be a bit busier tonight and tomorrow.  No laundry, no dishes, a very hot apartment, and the worry that the items in the fridge would spoil.  No TV, no computer, no video games, not even books.

On the other hand, Sandy and I got a really nice Hawaiian BBQ pizza from the very understated pizza place up on Story,  opened a bottle of wine, and after dinner sat in our deck chairs in the dark, watching the stars and planets coming out of the haze, listening to the children playing in the pool, chatting quietly between ourselves.

So overall, the evening was a really nice plus.  I'm thinking we could do with a few more power outages in our lifestyle.  Just...not right before a party, please.

Happy BIrthday Amywithani!

I just want to take this time to say that I really appreciate having you as a friend. I'd also include an old Irish toast, but I always manage to make them sound like threats or insults.

In any case, I hope you have many, many more happy birthdays!

Birthday Thoughts

Today I could get all angsty and mordant, with commentary like "Half my life has fallen by the wayside, oh woe is me" But today is nice and warm, and the sky is a perfect robin's egg blue. And I had a fantastic barbecue pork sandwich from the same people who catered our wedding. All in all, it's a nice day for a birthday.

Still, I reflect on my life )

...and that's enough reflection. Today's for looking at the future: )
