Unfortunately, for the last five days, I've been dealing with a severe tooth infection, so I've missed going to any Pride celebrations. I mean, people seeing me scowling and grimacing in pan might get the wrong idea. So instead, I've been living vicariously though Metafilter and Google+, as suddenly history changed around me.

What I do have, is pictures )

Good job. We have so much work still t do for equality and civil rights, but just this weekend, we can congratulate ourselves.

Wotta party. A great start to the holiday season. There was a lot less cookie making and a lot more alcohol, but hey, it was a toot.

Random thoughts:

I found a bowl of leftover chocolate sauce and ground graham crackers that had been intended to coat white chocolate and lemon treats. On impulse, I mixed the two together, rolled it out on wax paper, and froze it. I found out that it really needed to be cut before it froze, but the result was quite tasty. I'm not sure if I'll ever be able to duplicate it- (ingredients? Measures? What's that?) but I did like the result.

Evil Dead the Musical turned out to be much better written and more funny than I thought it would be. It turned the problem of combining the first two Evil Dead movies into an opportunity for self-referential humor, and combined a variety of musical styles into the revue. The quality of singing was mixed, but the person they selected for Ash had the appearance down. And of course there were the one-liners from the movies. It was an excellent play to see with lots of sugar and alcohol.

Overall it was a grand time, as it always is when we gather a large bunch of friends for a party. I'm lucky to know so many wonderful people.

Now if you'll excuse me, I think I need about a gallon of the hair of the dog.

...and now I must sleep on a tree branch for a week.

I'm actually not used to eating a lot, especially fatty foods. As part of our weight management program, we've been eating smaller portions, with less meat, and even in parties I generally just nibble.

But today, with going out to watch the Sharks game with some friends at a restaurant- an affair that turned into a restaurant and a pub, I ate, and ate and ate. And I ate bad stuff: tortilla chips; cheese fries; a couple slices of pan pizza; a pulled pork sandwich. We're talking a massive carb and protein load, so when Sandy and I got home, we both immediately crashed and took naps, the same way we might after a night of drinking.

I have places to go, and people to give rides to tonight. And four hours later I still feel bloated and a little woozy. And of course, the Sharks lost. Thus the wages of sin.

Indeed my cold was courteous, in that it waited until after the LARP was all finished to manifest. Or maybe it just couldn't stand the excitement of the day, since it seems to be a pretty mild cold, more annoying than anything else.

But the weekend was wonderful- I survived a bout of zombie movie on Halloween, to attend a brilliant Dragaeria LARP that involved governmental change and macroeconomics. Since it's Dragaeria, it all worked out well. I got to play a brilliantly decadent Phoenix, something like a Bertie Wooster with a deathwish. I bumbled around, insulting Dragons and inserting the occasional pointed observation or question between my calls for drinks. And then abruptly, solved a mystery that turned out to be far more personally important than the turning of the cycle. Lots and lots of fun, and I actually got some fairly intense acting in. I'm looking forward to the next LARP.

After a week where I worried about the flu catching me in time for the party, my belated birthday went off pretty much perfectly.

And the party! To explain about the party, I should explain a bit about my childhood: The first thing I remember is one of, if not the first moon landing. The early 70s was a time when space exploration was still glamorous and futuristic. So naturally as a kid I got the rocket ship cake. Said cake was a plain sheet cake with a plastic toy Saturn V rocket on it, with a capsule at the top that could be launched by spring. So naturally when I was asked what kind of cake I wanted, I asked for a rocket cake.

I got a rocket cake, and how! Made by the highly talented [livejournal.com profile] starseryn It was an actual 3 foot long cake in the shape of a rocket, with rice crispy fins, and covered with buttercream frosting in the actual colors of a Saturn V.

The low-quality picture picture honestly doesn't do the cake justice. It was fantastic, and it tasted wonderful. I am really grateful to both racerxmachina and [livejournal.com profile] starseryn.

As for the rest of the party, I had the delight of sharing my birthday with a group of wonderful friends, some of the finest people I know. Really, I was honored to have you all here. Add to that wonderful party foods ranging from pork buns to greenbean pastries, to ma po tofu. And hot sake and champagne, and, and...today I am still sleepy and replete. This is a good start to my year.

Very pleasant indeed!

I spent all of Sunday, and much of today recovering from THE PARTY, otherwise I would have posted earlier.  I had a fantastic time hosting THE PARTY, in fact I think everyone had a pretty damn good time.  And I think I owe it really to the fantastic people who came.  I never really did affairs like THE PARTY in Santa Barbara, and so I'm still looking at it all with wide-eyed wonder that so many people can have such a good time for so long.  Of course THE PARTY was also helped by the pinata, and the food- thank you EVERYONE who brought stuff, and the tequila.  Glorious lovely tequila.  And the Indestructable Pinata of DOOM.

But really, THE PARTY was made by the people who came to it, and I'm honored, amazed  and thrilled once again by the incredible people I know.

Thank you all, and I'm looking forward to the next one!

Pleasant indeed.  I went outside on my usual afternoon saunter around the building, and it wasn't too hot.  Even walking across the parking lot didn't feel like crossing Death Valley like it did earlier this week.

Which is a good thing, because I have a lot to do this afternoon: go to the bank, buy beer, get two watermelons, dash home, doctor one of the melons, help clean up, prep the grill, get my pre-party panic out of the way, prep veggies, fix dinner, water the cats, feed the plants....

Thankfully it won't be so hot like it was before, when all I could do is lie around and think fond thoughts of a beer trough.  beer is going to be drunken like civilized people tomorrow!

So for my first party drink I tried making this, and decided to preserve the recipe for eternity, or the next time I get thirsty.

The drink that REALLY picks up up while it calms you down!

Strong Coffee
Cinnamon
Ibarra Mexican chocolate
A little milk

Poured into a thermos, shaken.

1 measure poured into highball glass.
splash in 1/2 measure rum

According to [livejournal.com profile] racerxmachina, I have a new "melts panties off girls" drink, and named it El Guapo. I think it's not half bad.

...and the key word is FABULOUS.

We have drinks. We have chips. We have flautas fixins'. And we have the makings for some truly kickass salsa.

We even have a Pinata, which is so crammed full of goodies that transporting it to the tree will be a problem. And happily, it looks to be a clear day.

Looking good!
