The Sports Day: Compare and Contrast
Mar. 19th, 2004 09:50 amAfter reading Scary go Round for Wednesday, yesterday , and today, I have realized that I have to buy a cricket bat.
It's not that I have any real interest in the sport: no, my interest is sparked by the fact that the cricket bat seems to be a real improvement over that standard weapon of improvised mayhem, the American baseball bat.
I mean, LOOK at your average cricket bat: unlike your baseball bat, which is basically just a smoothed over club, this one is, as they say, "designed for the attacking player", for "explosive hitting". The ingenious thing is, it's flat design means you have two surfaces to hit with: a broad one for ease of targeting, and a narrow side, for deep penetrating bruises. The broad surface means a cricket bat can also block better then a baseball bat as well. It's definitely a swinging weapon- the broad flat striking surface, so reminiscent of those huge swords from various fantasy CRPGs, should give good momentum for the impact. Truly, it's a great improvement over the old corkwood slugger for home defense.
Of course the baseball bat has one great advantage: it's readily available in any retail outlet with a sports section. When I looked up Santa Barbara cricket supplies on Google, I received lists of suppliers of live and frozen insets- I can not only buy crickets wholesale, but mealworms and bloodworms as well. I love merchandising, but I can see my search will take some effort.
Oh yeah. Scary Go Round, the series that started my interest in cricket, is something I strongly recommend. It’s got that quirky British sense of humor, characters that are strongly developed and individual. The stories are funny and offbeat, with a whimsically gruesome undercurrent that I find irresistible. I even like the artwork, with it's deceptively cheery painted aspect.
And it has cricket bats. Check it out, it's worth moving that index finger over onto the mouse button..
