Mako, the utterly most important character of the other night's Golden Sky Stories. Just ask her. Drawn by the GM, the day after the game. Her visual concept is not "cute sexy catgirl in sailor fuku", more like "Why's that girl in the 50 year-old schoolgirl outfit staring at me? Didn't some horror movie start this way?"

Mako in game was completely, utterly deadpan. Whether it was suggesting they sell the Fox's shrine to raise money, or urging her bird friend to eat more, she was completely expressionless. Despite being selfish and standoffish, she has a good heart. Maybe. Not that she cares or anything.

The fish she is carrying was carelessly left in a display tank in a restaurant- obviously the didn't want it if they were just going to be leaving it there. There might be a girl at the local school who forgot her lunch today, and will come back to class to find a perfectly delectable meal wriggling and flopping on her desk. Not that she's Mako's friend or anything, she was just passing by. And a cat will do what she wants.

With Marvel Comics hinting that Black Panther will become "American Panther", a typical storm of controversy and speculation has occurred over the supposed Americanization of an African character.

The artists over at The Temple of Cartoon Mojo on the other hand, wondered what would happen if MORE iconic characters were made patriotic. The results range from-

-the silly,

to the utterly awesome.

So check it out!

OK, so I admit it: as a kid I liked playing with my G.I. Joe (original large size) and Johhny West dolls action figures. I also like perusing art site for interesting character designs, and one of my favorite parts of WoW and City of Heroes were the character builders.

That's why I've been having a lot of fun with Anime Character Maker 2, It's a nice simple program where you can select from a menu of features and clothing, and come up with a basic character design fairly quickly. In some ways the choices are fairly limited, but it's a nice start, and it'll be easy to add more features in the next several versions of this, so it'll be interesting to see where this goes. And as a quick way to churn out basic characters, it's not bad.

As an example, just for fun, here is an anime version of my character Zanne from my current D&D game. The trick was getting the proper absent minded expression for him.

For a project, I've been looking at a lot of fantasy artwork, particularly that of female costumes. And while there is actually quite a bit of good artwork out there, standard fantasy art seems to be commissioned on a different basis.  For people who want artwork like that, I give you the specifications you should use for the artist.

"OK, so for this female ranger on the cover, I want her to be lean and athletic, except she should have huge, really firm cone-shaped  breasts. We're talking epic, fantasy-scale breasts. *gestures* See, like this, except more. No, LARGER! Great!  Now for armor she should have a leather mini-bustier-bra thingie, so you can drown a hobbit in her cleavage, and can see her belly down to her hip joints at least. Did I mention we can tell it's chilly outside? Let's see...she should be wearing one of those  loin-cloth-drapery things so we can tell she's had a bikini wax, but she should be wearing some more armor... armor up her shoulders - really big armor pads. You can also put some leather armor on her knee high boots with six-inch heels. Most important, she should be standing holding her bow, but twisted around so we can see both her ass and her breasts, twist more! And arch that back, yeah, that's right. Now give her something like, Liv Tyler lips, and an angry snarl-pout, like she can't decide whether she wants to kill you or do you, or both.

And oh yeah, make her an elf. And blond."

Not that I'm bitter or something, and yeah, you've heard it all before. I just think I need to take a break from bad gaming artwork.

I think we've all seen it. The book cover, illustration, or painting on a fantasy topic where you just have to stoip and ask yourself, "Did they mean to do that? No, it's too earnest, too unreflective." But still, you have to wonder how the artist didn't know they were making something quite unlike what they intended.

For example:

"This is My Toxic Cloud Spell."

"Those flying phalluses! I can't look!

"Alles klar, Herr Kommissar?"

(I'm actually not sure if that last one is intentional or not. But I still say it's probably the best portrayal of Miles Vorkoskigan.)

So does anyone else have any accidentally funny fantasy pics to share?

So what's a better art subject than women in cheesecake-y outfits? Women in cheesecake-y outfits, WITH DINOSAURS!

Meluran at Deviantart, knows what people like:

Ms. Uran is incidentally, one of my favorite rpg artists, known for having done some of the best artwork for Exalted, and more recently, Unhallowed Metropolis. Her art style is just fabulous, she's been expanding her style repertoire, and so her gallery is well worth checking out!

Tebe Interesno shows where guitars come from. And knowing is half the battle.

Note: Tebe Interesno is the journal of my favorite Russian modern surrealist.

(Edit: Forgot to mention: original story nicked from James Nicoll's blog) Britney Spears shows original pictures of herself next to airbrushed ones. Just to show how the perfection-obsessed world of mass media alters already attractive humans to remove any "imperfections" and make them adhere to an inhuman standard of beauty.

Not that I've ever been a fan of Britney Spears, either her music or the person, but this is actually pretty interesting and frankly, something of a brave move.  In the original pictures Britney is still a fairly attractive woman, but the editing makes her something different, less human, frankly.  It's like the people in charge of advertising are desperate to approach the Uncanny Valley from the other direction, and on some magazine covers and advertisements have succeeded.

Myself, I think the future will probably end up with everyone wearing VR goggles that automatically photoshop away all imperfections in real time.  After all, why stop at magazines if you can 'shop the people themselves?

If you ladies are still strapped for costume ideas at this late date, well, there's this original idea from a Japanese designer:

This is one of a collection of 15 chemograph plates from Military Costumes in Old Japan, by Kazumasa Ogawa, published in 1895.

Those strange and strangely enthusiastic  Japanese fans have done it again. In this case, it's the cast of Watchman, turned into Bishoujo-style girls. It's evidently a page describing the background of characters in anticipation of the upcoming movie, and is all part of the grand japanese fan tradition of taking serious concepts, and making them cute by turning them into girls.

At least we're not talking about making tanks or aircraft cute by turning them into girls.  This time.

Hmmm...I wonder if I could turn this into an icon....

I've stumbled upon a character template graphics system in the style of the famous Heromachine, only using templates in the style of the DC animated universe.  This is something whereby one can seriously waste away an entire weekend making superheroes.   the only disadvantage is that the site is not in English.

The character generator

A thread of people making various heroes.  this has some massively fun depictions.  It not only has some recognizable superheroes, but also fantasy characters as well.  It even includes the obligatory outraged post by an annnoyed "real artiste".

Currently, this recognizable trio is my favorite:

this is going to totally blow my weekend.
