Ssssssh...BOOM!
Jul. 6th, 2005 12:12 amThe highlight of our Fourth of July was Monday, when we had a nice long patriotic picnic (celebrating the American right to slack off), and then saw fireworks. Boy did we see fireworks.
Since I was feeling a bit under the weather, We passed up the very professional SPARKLE show down at the harbor (and incidentally flaked on a noisy, stressful barbeque held by mother, sis, brother in law and niece), in favor of seeing the Goleta neighborhood fireworks display.
While the show was smaller and less professional then the ones down at the pier, they were far closer and lower. I ended up standing in a parking lot right below the fireworks, so close that the explosions were felt in my teeth and sternum. So close I could see the red sparks of the fuses arcing up into the sky after the boost charges went out, before they exploded into fireworks that filled my vision. So low that I was seriously worried about trees catching on fire. And they even had Roman candles. I can't remember the last time I saw those.
It was paradoxically, a spectacular, yet intimate fireworks performance. While I'm not planning to be in town next 4th of July, if we happen to be passing through, I think we'll go to the Goleta fireworks.
