From the fun, smart and in-your-face blog "Smart Bitches Trashy Books", comes this article: Yet another way romance novels are powerfully politically subversive.  One might not consider romance novels subversive, but in the islamic areas of north nigeria, books about couples showing true love based on feelings, can get the books- staple bound in the local language- burned as subversive.

Subversion through romance.  I love the concept, because after all, weren't the original romances somewhat subversive in the way THEY extolled romantic love over marrying out of duty to the family/clan/nation?  And if this can help people in Nigeria find love in spite of local tradition, well more power to them, says I.
