Yet another LJ brew-haha
Jul. 10th, 2008 02:20 pmThis time, over an editor who sent an apparently bigoted rejection letter, and the author who didn't realize what he was doing when he posted it in his blog.
It's interesting that the controversy is as much over whether it was right and proper to publish the letter, as it is about the editor's alleged bigotry. It's even more interesting in that this seems to be revealing a "Generational" gap in SF & Fantasy fans, between say people like Elizabeth Bear and Tobias Buckell, and the happy people at Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine.
But the larger issue is that this seems to be more evidence of a schism between one "generation" of SF writers and the next...and another reason for the steady decline in Science Fiction. The two generations seem fixated on completely different topics of interest, and seem generally to talk past each other. The older gen seems more likely to look at possible over sexist or racist acts in the best possible light (i.e. "Misunderstandings or "misinterpretations), while regarding issues of privacy as far more important, while the younger generation apparently takes a completely opposite view. And both sides tend to talk past each other.
In other words, it might be just my imagination, but the older, established generation of SF people are more and more out of step with the times...and that could be a reason why SF cons tend to be attracting older and older people.
