Nov. 17th, 2008 12:40 pmA bit of a traumatic weekend for me, what with watching parts of my home town burn down. If what they say is correct, the tea garden is where I used to hike with friends in high school to enjoy a natural hot spring- its sad to think of all that imported exotic landscaping (palm trees, etc.) that was growing wild, having burned. A friend of mine also lost her father's house which was an actual historic SB house, and the really nice Westmont professor whose son I used to tutor lost his house as well.
I just have to remember, in spite of the pictures of the flames towering over the Riviera, that things could have been much worse. Mission Canyon could have gone up, and we could have lost the Botanic Gardens and the Mission. Or if the wind had been harder, the fire could have taken out much of downtown. Most importantly, my family and friends are safe. Anything that was lost is just things, and those can and will be replaced.
We were lucky.
Stay safe, everyone.
