I tried a new morning workout, which I think has some potential.

I call it the "Emergency Wipe and Wring". here's how it works:

  • Pop back home before work to check on the kitties.
  • See that the dishwasher left the sink brim-full of water and there's a half-inch of water covering the kitchen floor.
  • Swear, long and loudly.  Deep breaths, get that blood pumping!
  • Grab a towel, and a bucket.  Step up!
  • Bend over, swish towel around water.  Stretch it!
  • Straighten up, wring towel into bucket. Push!
  • repeat thirty times, until kitchen floor is merely damp.  Work it!

For an extra digit- exercise, call the management and see how fast they can get a plumber over.

So, after a night of fasting and worry in spite of my rational mind, and a quick, efficient doctor's visit, I am left with three things:

  • The knowledge that my medical issue is inded the minor, if painful problem I thought it was. No cause for alarm.

  • A really bad case of gas.

  • A set of pictures which, my lovely wife has informed me in no uncertain terms, nobody will want to see.

The last confuses me a bit. After all, nobody wanted to see the pictures I retained after my root canal, or the x-rays of my oddly-shaped sinuses. OOne would think people would have more curiosity about biology.

In any case, I bow to the will of the majority. No pictures scanned and posted, no new livejournal icons. Just the relief of knowing I have a clean bill of health.

For my special exam, I am only to have clear liquids tonight and tomorrow.  The chicken broth with garlic was icky, the Gatorade and apple juice boring.

But hey, look at this!  Ginger ale is a clear liquid, and so is whiskey!  And alcohol isn't mentioned as prohibited.  I'll read the scrip again- nope, no mention of alcohol.  So Old Fashioneds here we come!

For the first time in three days, I know I'm going to sleep through any physical discomfort.

On the plus side, we get to move back home today, which will be nice. Hopefully the house won't be too mildewy, but in any case my weekened is going to be spent in cleaning up.  I can't thank [profile] sandpanther enough for putting us up on such short notice, as well as putting up with us.

On the negative, I have a follow up vist to a specialist fora medical problem I've been dealing with for a while, and has been keepingme awake recently.  It's probaby a minor problem, but the fact that they were willing to see me the next day is really twigging the hypochondriac in me.

And right now I'm getting more registrations in than I can process.  Bleh.

I found that a half hour or so of vigorous dancing alleviates somewhat the icy cold of Outermost Apartment.    "Pink Panther's Penthouse Party is an especially efficacious album for warming me up.

"Baba ba ba, ba baba ba, baba ba ba, ba baba ba..."

Our cat's have a different opinion. Alice found my dancing in a circle around her puzzling, and then alarming.  She escaped under a chair, and then the bedroom, to avoid Papa's strange behavior.  Dorothy had enough sense to stay on the bed the entire time.

"You can blow with this
Or you can blow with that
You can blow with this
Or you can blow with that"

After that, I retired and wrote an entire short story about Dealing with Cold.  I may put it up here, after I sober up and edit the thing.

Wednesday, I thought that going to an evening examination for a county position with a bad case of the flu was about as bad as this week could get. But today put that in perspective.

Today started around 1:00 AM, with Sandy complaining of fever and chills, and escalated into her barely being able to walk when I took her to the clinic at 10:00 in the morning. Fortunately, the waiting room was only half filled, or I would have taken her to the emergency room.As it was, it was a half hour before we got shown into a room...where after a short examination, the doctor decided that Sandy needed an IV drip to deal with massive dehydration. It's a sign of how sick she was that Sandy, who normally has a phobia about needles, took the IV without a flinch...even after the nurse said in effect "Whoops! There goes the needle- fortunately you have another arm!"

The human body contains on average 5.6 liters of water; the nurse ended up giving sandy almost 1.2 liters of saline solution. We couldn't really figure out how she had gotten so dehydrated, except possibly from sweating it out over five days of fevers. But on the good side, after spending nearly five hours at the clinic, she felt better: the dizziness and chills faded, and I was able to take her home, where I'm being careful to keep her- and myself- well hydrated as we wait out the worst flu I've seen in years.

We didn't go to the clinic in time to get any antivirals, so we can only deal with the symptoms- but fortunately, we got there in time to get a room (the place filled up FAST after us), and in time to keep Sandy from getting much sicker.

And that's something to be grateful for.

Ick. Sick.

I'm recovering from the worst illness I've had in about twenty years- a stomach flu that had us wondering if I would have to be taken to the emergency room last night.  Fortunately, by around 9:00 pm, I was able to actually keep water down.  In fact, the illness went from terrifying to painfully annoying (as well as painful) with my staying up half the night, due to headache and cramps from the severe chills I had earlier.  If it wasn't for the fact that I was having trouble walking, the picture of my sneaking around to give myself hot compresses would be amusing.  I actually was watching the clock, mumbling "12:45- six hours until I can take a hot bath for these pains without waking people up...2:45, four hours left to go...5:45, let's call it 45 minutes..."

I've been amazed at how fast I recovered- I went from this morning having to think long and hard about basic movements, to now being write and put out some job applications.  Yay.  I'll be back to the grind in no time.

And if I ever want to write about a character going through fever, chills, diarrhea and vomiting, hey, I'm set.
