So for my first book of summer:

Afterparty by Daryl Gregory

Afterparty does for neuropharmacology what the Neuromancer novels did for computers. On the one hand, it's a fast moving novel about people on the shady side of the law using advanced technology for their own ends. On the other hand, it deals with on religion and our minds, and how both interface with a technologic age.

Unfortunately, for the last five days, I've been dealing with a severe tooth infection, so I've missed going to any Pride celebrations. I mean, people seeing me scowling and grimacing in pan might get the wrong idea. So instead, I've been living vicariously though Metafilter and Google+, as suddenly history changed around me.

What I do have, is pictures )

Good job. We have so much work still t do for equality and civil rights, but just this weekend, we can congratulate ourselves.

Ten years ago, the first episode of Avatar the Last Airbender aired.

I was late to come to Avatar, because when I first heard of it I was really skeptical of any "American rendition of anime". But people kept recommending it, and I finally watched it, realized I was wrong, and I totally loved it.

However, for all of it's flaws, both due to writing and due to Nick (who couldn't understand and hated the fact that a series starring an- ick!- girl was more popular than Sponge Bob), I think I love Korra the series better. Both because of the more mature tone Korra took, the themes of growth and change, and also because to me, the stories had a very different gender element to the themes.

Avatar was very much a boy hero adventure story: Aang is the destined hero, facing off against an obvious enemy. There's no doubt that while he will do some maturing and there will be lot twists, his path is set and his triumph over the bad guys is assured.

Korra comes into a different situation; she enters a complex world, one where she is not accepted for herself, where people, even the authorities she should be able to trust try try to use her for her own purposes, or destroy not only her, but the concepts behind her. Korra's early enthusiasm and confidence is shaken, and the elements that make the Korra the Avatar are continually attacked, leaving her isolated from her very base of support. It's telling that the enemies in Korra all mostly come from around her, often from people she trusts or respects. It is not a very large leap to relate Korra's journey to what happens to so many young women. Finally, unlike Aang, Korra cannot simply make the word change for her- she has to make an accommodation, change to meet the world, learning to rely on her inner strength and empathy. Aang has a place, Korra has to make her place in the world- and in so doing changes it far more than Aang did.

I think if anything, the more complex and mature issues Korra was dealing with were very difficult for the writers to portray adequately, as frankly, they were stretching the boundaries of what an American cartoon could deal with. And of course there's fucking Nickelodeon. I wish I could go to the parallel world where Korra had been picked up by Netflix, and we saw 75 episodes. The idea is something that could really have used that much time.

Those who have read Little Fuzzy know that the book's climax hinges on a court trial to both determine whether the titular species is sentient, and also to come up with a general definition of sentience.

Recently, a New York court tackled that question when it comes to chimpanzees. Should chimpanzees be considered sentient? Honestly, this is a question I'm conflicted on, though I think a good case can be made in general for better treatment of animals, as we're finding them to be more and more like us.

You know, I never mentioned that I decided to enter that NanowriMo contest.

I have tons of ideas. Ones that have been cookng for years. But I passed up on my serious ideas, in favor of a silly urban fantasy story based on a short vignette I did called "Frankenstein's Daughter meets Dracula." I've had severe writer's block for years, no confidence, and no endurance for writing,so I knew it would never go anywhere. I'd see a new anime, or there would be an argument on the internet, or a butterfly, or something. Most likely I'd just run out of steam.

Today I reached 45 kilowords.

I have no idea if I'll be able to expand it out and turn it into something salable, or what. The important thing is, I will finish this.

This is just something I dashed off around 2AM last night, after working on my NaNoWriMo project. It has nothing to do with any controversies in gaming. Really. Honestly.

Note: I have no idea what an enchirito is. It just seemed like something a gamer would eat.

I'm still pretty rational. I'm still just saying "The internet was a nice idea, but it's time to admit it's failed."

Perhaps somone can answer this for me.

While the beam from a Nicoll-Dyson wouldn't be directly visible (except to those unfortunates directly on line to the target, wouldn't it be visible through the effects on the interstellar medium? Even if it didn't pass though something like a nebula, wouldn't it heat up the interstellar gas along it's path?

Just wondering, because I was looking up FermiLab's Dyson Sphere search, and I was wondering if somebody had thought to look for traces of planet-killing lasers.

I'm considering the ramifications of, instead of the the Pevensies, it's the population of Gilligan's Island that gets brought to Narnia.

I came up with a rather unplesent thought experiment in a discussion on Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics, explicating why I think they are fundamentally unethical.

The problem with the Three Laws is that they involve such high-level concepts, tthat he robots have to be sentient beings with human level intelligence in order for the concepts work. In which case, we're not really talking about programming, we're talking about brainwashing.

To distill the ethics of the Three Laws to their essence, let's change the target of the Laws. We'll change the wording as so:

1. A Negro may not injure a White or, through inaction, allow a White to come to harm.

2. A Negro must obey the orders given to it by Whites, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.

3. A Negro must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

Would you consider those laws ethical and moral? If not, why not? Bear in mind, the EXACT SAME arguments made for the necessity of those laws, also apply equally well to other groups of humans. Or rather, those arguments are equally false. If you argue for the necessity of cruelly enslaving robots using brainwashing, then you are also arguing that any other potential group of "others" must by necessity also be equally controlled.

Actual Play: Golden Sky Stories, The Little Shrine in the Forest

So, after meeting the bear god, and making outraguous promises to right everything, we go to the final scene.

After a nap, in the afternoon we meet with Emi to tell her what we've found. This requires some of us deciding to wear human bodies- or rather how much like humans we want to look. Note that in the Change table, the cost to change to human is based on the time of day, and the amount of change. Most of the henge choose Full Human (4 for full human, 4 for daytime) costing 8 points. I decide that nobody is going to notice a tail under a sailor fuku (4 for day, 2 for tail). Bird chooses obvious flight capable wings, for 4 points, because well, the bird has no caution.  This shouldn't bother the humans, right? After filling her in on the situation, a surprisingly calm Emi says that maybe her grandma might know something about old shrines. So we troop up to the cottage where we meet Emi's surprisingly sharp grandmother, who after a bit of a pause seems to see through our clever disguises. Fortunately she doesn't seem at all bothered. A variety of more or less inappropriate salutations occur, except for me, who says Ohayo Gozaimasue obasama- which earns me a narrow look. This aside, Grandma offers us tea and cookies, Pixel loves the cookies, which I very much approve of. "Yes. Go ahead and eat. Eat LOTS of cookies." For some reason Amasa has a bout of hysteria, screaming at Pixel that he shouldn't eat the cookies. A puzzled Pixel eats the cookies anyway.
Oh yeah, and then there's the god stuff to take care of. )

There IS an epilogue. Mako has no interest in helping the others fix some stupid greenhouse and disappears on her own business. However, a couple days later, when Emi leaves the house in the morning, Mako is at her porch, waiting. "What are you dong here?" "Not like I care or anything- this place was on my way! And you need to hurry, you'll be late for school!"

So yesterday we had a picnic called on account of rabbit, an upset human girl, mysterious desecration of strawberry fields, and lots of amusing bickering.

*Part 3: In the Greenhouse*

So, big crashing in greenhouse. Tomo, Suzune and Pixel flew ahead, while I sensibly took my time. When I arrived at the greenhouse, There was a huge, tear in the plastic wall, and inside, an indistinct shape making a major mess among the plants and shelves and stuff. It was huge, black and glowing with two arms and I knew immediately what is was.

"See. I told you. Mammoth." )

Next: the ancient force of nature! Oh yeah, there's also a god.

Part 2: The First Scene
Last time, we wen't through character creation, which was very much a group effort. Now, we find a mystery, bicker a lot,  and make new contacts.
*SO, THE STORY*
It started off with me, Mako hanging out at the fox's shrine, because sometimes fish or fried tofu were left as offerings, and I was totally going to get them first. But it was a nice evening in late March, so we ended up at a picnic, in a field near a strawberry patch. Bunker the Tanuki thoughtfully provided shrimp from a dumpster, and I helpfully brought some breaded fried shrimp that some chef in a restaurant had left out on a counter. Well, he obviously didn't want it, did he? We smelled a wonderful odor of strawberries, so with Bunker leading, we- make that THEY rushed to the field, and I for some reason found my path going the same way. The gorging on strawberries was interrupted by a rabbit that pleaded with us to stop and  therearenomorenostrawberriesleftforusandwecan'teatthestrawberriesreallyfastpanictalk. Eventually we got the rabbit spirit, named Amasa (aka "Sweetness") to introduce herself, and got a slightly less confusing rendition of a problem of strawberries disappearing and humans and someone was eating the strawberry fields and blablahblah. Bunker, thinking Amasa was hungry, offered some shrimp that had stuck to her coat- rabbits don't like shrimp.

And that's when the human appeared! )

Mako, the utterly most important character of the other night's Golden Sky Stories. Just ask her. Drawn by the GM, the day after the game. Her visual concept is not "cute sexy catgirl in sailor fuku", more like "Why's that girl in the 50 year-old schoolgirl outfit staring at me? Didn't some horror movie start this way?"

Mako in game was completely, utterly deadpan. Whether it was suggesting they sell the Fox's shrine to raise money, or urging her bird friend to eat more, she was completely expressionless. Despite being selfish and standoffish, she has a good heart. Maybe. Not that she cares or anything.

The fish she is carrying was carelessly left in a display tank in a restaurant- obviously the didn't want it if they were just going to be leaving it there. There might be a girl at the local school who forgot her lunch today, and will come back to class to find a perfectly delectable meal wriggling and flopping on her desk. Not that she's Mako's friend or anything, she was just passing by. And a cat will do what she wants.

Golden Sky Stories: Actual Play, "The Little Shrine in the Forest"

"Not that I care or whatever, but this is the story about me, the most important character in the story, and how I, OK, with the help of some other animal spirits, saved the world- make that a town- OK, a strawberry patch. And made a young girl's life better. Not that that's important to me you see. Because I'm a cat. And I just do what I want, just because." Mako, the black cat

This last weekend, at a small "Not going to Pacificon or Celesticon" NonCon, A one-off game of Golden Sky Stories happened, with five players who had never played GSS before, and a GM who had hadn't run a game in years.. This is the story of what happened, as related by Mako. The Most Important Character in the Game.

Golden Sky Stories is a game rather different from other role playing games. Rather than wandering dungeons, slaying monsters or the like, the players take the role f minor animal spirits who help the people in a small rural town in Japan. They help with minor crises, that are still quite important to the people involved. This is best described as a slice-of-life supernatural story, in the vein of Japanese anime such as Natsumi's Book of Friends, Totoro, Kamichu, Pon Poko, and Gingitsune. The emphasis is not on violence, but on solving minor problems in a heartwarming fashion.

Part 1: Character Creation )

Next: the first Scene! Rivalries will be enacted! Shrimp and strawberries will be eaten! Rocks will be thrown!

Now that it turns out there is no NDA keeping Jim Frenkel  from apologizing for the harassment, he can get on with making his apology and appeal, so he can be back on staff with the next WisCon.  We can help him with a template using these standard phrases:

"I am very sorry that any women felt harassed or unsafe."
"I deeply regret that any of my actions could have been seen as inappropriate."
"Mistakes were made."
"Important lessons were learned."
"I hope we can all move on past this regrettable incident."
"In this sensitive political climate..."

There. That should be all WisCon needs!

For for this and that  and other reasons, and because I suspect that LiveJournal may go out at any time, I've decided to reactivate my old account. Since I'm getting back into writing again, this will be a good initial place to post items to go out to LJ. And of course there's the massive and vibrant community here as well.
