On the one hand, my job prospects and schemes for making money may be said to have a slightly feverish tinge.   For instance, I've reluctantly concluded that my idea to make a Captain Pike from "The Menagerie" costume, and sit on a downtown corner with a sign saying "CAN ONLY BLINK 'YES' OR 'NO'" will not have a proper return on the money invested.

On the other hand, I'm doing some experimenting with dinner

Instead of boneless chicken breasts I accidentally bought chicken fillets today, which really bbegged to have something done with them immediately.  So rather than making a mixed chicken and veggie skillet, I soaked the fillets in lime juice, and floured them with a mix of flour, cumin, pepper salt and granulated garlic.  And then I sauteed them using BUTTER instead of my usual oil.  I don't do the whole "flour and fry" thing very often, so it'll be interesting if this turns out OK

I also sauteed some carrots and onions in BUTTER with garlic and Rosemary, and I'm going to fold them iinto the mashed potatoes I'm making.  Why all the butter?  Well, Racerxmachina may regret voting for "Julie and Julia" on movie night, but I'm thinking that the French all cook with butter, and they all live to be ancient (insert world demographics chart here), so it can't be that bad.  Also, Ms. Julia Childs cooked with about a pound of butter EVERY DAY, so if it's good for her, the least I can do is try it in a saute.

Racerxmachina is looking at the green-tinged mashed potatoes with an expression remniscent of a dubious five year-old.  We shall see how she likes them.

Edit: she says the potatoes are fantastic!

I just got word that I've been accepted to take the test for an Appraiser position for Santa Clara County.

This is the first step in the process for getting a job as an Appraiser for SCC...and unlike the test for the library position (which I heard about the night before), this time I have over two weeks notice before the test. That's time enough to actually do some studying and be prepared. So, it's time to hit the library and do my homework. This time, I'm going to go into the test prepared and ready.

I woke up today with no motivation at all, and great difficulty mustering the energy to get out of bed. So I got a late start, fiddled around with some errands, and barely got any job-hunting work done. I did check the Santa Clara County employment site, and saw a position that I qualified for- with twenty minutes left before it expired. Fortunately I had an application on file with them, and managed to get it out in time- hopefully somethng will come of it.

After that, it was evening, and I saw that the rain had given way to spectacular cloudscapes (I love living in a place with actual weather), and so I decided to go for a late afternoon walk. This time I decided on the uncertain perils of Sunnyvale, and took a walk along the Bay park. On one side was the freeway to Milpitas, on the other a seasonal wetlands, that had something like twenty, count-em TWENTY snowy white egrets, doing what egrets do...which is nothing except look beautiful. I walked far enough to see the actual bay (unimpressive in this area), saw a bunch of ducks and a blue heron flying away...and something I 'm sure was a small otter swimming in one of the flood control pools.

And for once I had long horizons- THere were no trees or buildings blocking the sight lines, the rain had swept away the smog, and the mountains were crystal clear under the dramatic lines of clouds. I could see Mt. Diablo, even, far off in the distance on the horizon, what I'm certain was Mt. Tam, looking misty and mysterious.

All in all, it wasn't that bad a day.

Amazing. Courtesy of Metafilter, I've actually encountered a song that's even worse to have going through your head at work than "the Internet is for Porn".

It really is vile. (Very, very VERY NSFW)

Such a pity that at lunch I clicked on a random Metafilter link and watched this video right before an interview with an employment agency.
