I am writing this post on my laptop, which I have back again after months of it being out of commission. Racerxmachina did me the huge favor of taking it to the campus repair shop, and they kindly rebooted the system and kicked Norton Anticomputer of it for me at no charge.

So finally I'll be able to write again without wrestling over the computer with RxM. This means I'll be able to churn out even more crap then ever!

I am utterly thrilled!

There should be a term for the depression that comes from going in to work on the Monday after a really nice weekend.  A weekend spent in (Fri) watching anime, drinking and eating with friends, (Sat) playing video games with friends, and (Sun) having spicy ribs and mint juleps at a friend's barbecue party.  A term for the depression that comes from from looking at the work, knowing it's there, and having no enthusiasm to deal with it.

What did I do this tedious Monday?  I went shop[ping.  Specifically, I stopped at the electronics mart up the street from where I worked, which is having a moving blow-out sale.  I didn't find a cheap internal laptop DVD/CD-Rom, which is what I really need, but I DID glom onto a really cheap wireless modem that will replace my current wireless.  That is, as soon as I get my damn laptop fixed.

So, what have you all done to combat Monday tedium?

I'm as frustrated as hell.

After two weeks at the shop, two weeks where the repairmen ouldn't seem to figure out what was wrong, I'm told that though it was "difficult", they located the problem in the video card, not the processor they replaced. They said they wouldn't charge me for labor, and would replace the video card with a 64mb card for $89.00, or the recommended 128MB one for $156.00.

I'm annoyed, and really wondering if I'm being taken to the cleanders here, especially since the prices for video cards seem all over the place. Does $156.00 for a 128MB ATI Mobility Radeon X300 card sound OK? Could I substitute another? I have a copy of the owner's manual, so I could probably replace the graphics card myself. SHould I get a second opinion?

Either way, I'm frustrated and angry. I need the laptop back, but I also don't have money to toss down the drain at it. Damn it!

The last couple days, my laptop has been spazzing out after about fifteen minutes of use- getting lines of pixellation, blinking on and off when I touch keys, and even completely crashing.  This only 5 weeks after getting it back from the shop.  It's weird that I'm hoping it's the I/O chip, because then the damn thing is on warranty.  If not, I doubt we can afford to repair it any time soon.

*sigh* and the keyboard's been acting up too, occasionally jumping the text cursor up a paragraph or  into the next tabbed window.

I think I hate Dells.

Well, I got my laptop back form the shop yesterday, and it turns out the I/O chip was the problem after all, so it's in more or less good working condition. Of course some programs aren't working properly, and I had to remove Norton because I couldn't get it to start at all, but that's not a major problem- at most I'll have to reinstall the programs.

The only real problem is my DVD-RW drive isn't working, so I'll have to get that replaced before I reinstall, or do the system restore I really need to do. In the meantime, I"ll probably need to borrow one so I can get my stuff backed up.

It never ends...

So naturally today after taking the kitties to the vet, I moved my laptop to the coffeee shop to work on job hunt stuff. When I turned it on, I got a scrambled screen, and then was booted into a safe mode which didn't fit on the screen, and then got the notice "Multiple Drive Partition Error". And then got nothing- noteven a blue screen, just a dimly lit screen.

So far, the advice I've received has been in the line of "there's services that can recover your data". which doesn't make me feel at all optimistic. Tomorrow I check to see if the slab is still under extended warranty, or if I've got a fancy doorstop.

It may seem slightly insane to buy one with the upcoming expenses, but with the upcoming move I think one will be highly useful, for e-mail, storing and modifying applications, checking job postings, learning several programs I've been wanting experience with, and for a bunch of other things.

Rumor to the contrary, I am NOT buying a laptop so I can play World of Warcraft. While I plan to buy and play it, it's not my primary reason, or even close to my main reason for buying the laptop. On the other hand, since I'm buying this on a payment plan, I might as well arrange the high-end capabilities so that I CAN play MMORPGs.

So my question for the computer experts, is this: does this look like an adequate system for what I have in mind?

This is what I'm looking at on my wish list: )

Any comments? Good? Bad? Should I trade up?
