So I've been reviewing pre-algebra with one of my clients overt the summer, getting him ready for the coming year. Just basic stuff you know, algebraic properties, FOIL, roots, exponents, scientific notation...maybe just to be sure I should go into logarithms ?

This week my client described his homework. It took me a bit of time to understand what the teacher was doing. You see, the teacher had these tiles, and one shape of tile would represent one element, and another shape tile another. So if you have five of the first sized tile, and three of the other....

*chortle* I think we are going to OWN this class,

What Do I Do With Those Darn Anime Kids is an essay by an art teacher who encounters the frustration fellow art teachers have with kids who are constantly drawing anime-style artwork. Or, as the teacher puts it:

At the time I just sat back and took it in, unbelieving.  What do you do with those damn anime kids, huh?  You mean, the kids that are interested in drawing?  The ones that are interested in learning concrete skills that will help them tell stories, with an interest in the human body, in posture and proportion?  Gosh, what is an art teacher to do with such challenging students?

For my part, I can totally see where she's coming from. One of the major things that I do in my work as a tutor is find out what the student's interests are and sculpt the lessons as much as possible about them. For the kid who is fascinated by tanks or the young woman who is interested in dancing, these give me points too engage with them, and to make the lessons interesting and useful from their perspective.

So, this is a nice little essay about engaging kids with an interest, instead of complaining about them. It's well worth reading for anyone interested in teaching, anime, or working with kids instead of against them.
