Well, I got my laptop back form the shop yesterday, and it turns out the I/O chip was the problem after all, so it's in more or less good working condition. Of course some programs aren't working properly, and I had to remove Norton because I couldn't get it to start at all, but that's not a major problem- at most I'll have to reinstall the programs.

The only real problem is my DVD-RW drive isn't working, so I'll have to get that replaced before I reinstall, or do the system restore I really need to do. In the meantime, I"ll probably need to borrow one so I can get my stuff backed up.

It never ends...
